Buda Castle Hill Danube River Sights in Budapest
One of the true gems of Budapest is definitely Buda Castle Hill, located on the Buda side above the city centre of Budapest and the Danube. The beautiful and historic area is definitely the most beloved and photographed landmark of the Riverside Attractions of Budapest.
The castle district is corresponding with the medieval royal city of Buda. Buda’s history dates back to 1247 when a fortress was built by King Bela IV. Some of the most important sights are the Buda Castle, Matthias Church, Fisherman’s Bastion.
The Buda Castle Hill is packed with historical buildings, medieval, baroque and 19th-century houses, churches and more. The area can be visited for free and it has many hidden treasures such as nuclear bomb shelters, Spy Museum and labyrinths (the attractions can be visited for a fee). Buda Castle has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, and it is open for visitors all year round. You can find several museums, cafes, restaurants and festivals and try the historical cable car, the Funicular (Budavari Siklo in Hungarian) which is in service since 1870.
