History of the Inner City Parish Church

The Inner City Parish Church (Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary) was the original gravesite of Bishop Saint Gellert, the martyr. During the years, the temple was destroyed and rebuilt several times, preserving the various eras and architectural styles. During the Turkish invasion in the 16th and 17th century, the gothic-style church was used as a mosque.  In 1723 the Great Fire has destroyed the church and it was rebuilt in Baroque style with some neo-Classical features.

The nowadays building unites several styles in perfect harmony. We can find Italian frescoes from the 15th century, neo-Gothic carved pulpit and a Gothic Chapel. The historical church offers various relics, such as the wooden neo-Gothic pulpit and the St Mary fresco from the 14th century which was discovered in 2010.

The Inner City Parish Church is open for visitors and it is a must-see attraction for tourists who are interested in history and religious arts. Admire the Roman ruins in the base, the beautiful paintings and statues inside the church.
