The Whale Danube River Sights in Budapest

An interesting sight of the riverside attraction of Budapest is the modern whale-shaped building, ‘Balna’ which connects 2 beautifully restored historic warehouses from the 19th century with a modern core with marvellous Danube panorama. The Whale is located on the Pest side, between Liberty Bridge and Petofi Bridge just opposite the University of Technology on the Buda side.

The Whale became a beloved hub of entertainment and shopping since its opening in 2013. The beautiful glass exterior offers natural light and interesting architecture for the mall, where you can find exhibitions, restaurants, shops and more.

The Danube was always an important transportation route, four public warehouses was built on the riverbank between 1874 and 1881. By the beginning of the 21.century, warehouses became run down and a project was launched to refurbish and use the warehouses and adapt them to a modern capital city. Today’s Whale was opened in 2003.
