Matthias Church
Matthias Church is probably the most famous church in Budapest. The church named after King Matthias the Fair is located in the Holy Trinity Square, Coronation Church of Buda the dates back to the 11th century and it witnessed many coronation ceremonies, Franz Joseph I of Hungary and Elisabeth, and Charles IV of Hungary and Zita of Bourbon-Parma were crowned within its walls.
According to heritage, a former church was founded in 1015 in the same location by Saint Stephen, the very first king of Hungary. He adopted Christianity in pagan Hungary. During the Mongol attacks, the church was destroyed and reconstructed at the end of the 13th century. The original name of the church was “The Church of Mary” and it was named after King Matthias in the 19th century.
Nowadays, Matthias Church is open for visitors, you can book guided tours or enjoy a concert inside the majestic building.
